GCSE FRENCH ER VERBS CONDITIONAL TENSE FOCUSING ON 25 HIGH-FREQUENCY FRENCH -ER VERBS This kind of grammar activity is really popular with my students - they like to work independently, practising and revising how to conjugate French verbs, and it’s a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. There are***150 conjugation questions across 3 differentiated conjugation challenges***, with an answer key booklet. I always give my students an answer key with this kind of workbook, as it facilitates independent learning, and they genuinely enjoy self and peer-assessment. Having an answer key also gives them an additional opportunity to engage with language and grammar. The format is as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: French-English and English-French. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in French across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in French, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in French. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding French verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. Notes and Next Steps, which encourages students to think about how their understanding of French conjugation works, reflect on what progress they have made, what their targets for improvement might realistically be, and what they might reasonably do in order to meet those targets. They also use this page to note any new verbs they learn, which helps them build up a comprehensive verb vocabulary. GCSE GERMAN KS4 GERMAN KS3 GERMAN SEPARABLE VERBS CONJUGATION PRACTICE 25 high-frequency German separable verbs, 150 conjugation questions, 3 differentiated challenges, answer keys ideal for advanced KS3 German students who are working with more complex language and texts, and KS4 German students who are revising tense and conjugation. My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. The focus is on common separable prefixes such as ab, an, aus, ein, um and zu. Prefixes such as entlang and entgegen are not included in this particular collection of verbs. I find it useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb conjugation. For example with the perfect tense, students need to have a good grasp of the relevant auxiliary in the present tense - there are verbs that require either haben or sein, and to get used to ensuring that the past participle is situated at the end of the clause or sentence. Forming the past participle follows a certain pattern, which students are able to***identify and predict*** the more they work with conjugation, and these quick conjugations will certainly help to embed that successfully. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in German across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. We don’t actually have all the clothes in our learning plan, we use them for developing language skills and awareness in general. I’ve included a selection of masculine and feminine, singular and plural, using the definite article. We talk a lot about ways of saying ‘the’ in French, and look at cognates and near cognates. We discuss the kinds of clothes we like to wear, and those we don’t! Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of this essential Italian vocabulary in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. PRIMARY SPANISH KS3 FRUITS CLASSROOM DISPLAY POSTERS My younger students love to see Spanish displays in the classroom, and they also work really well for older beginner Spanish learners too. There are25 fruits, definite article, feminine and masculine, singular and plural - that’s so useful as a way into the concept of gender. I tend to vary my displays quite regularly, and have different posters up at various times of the school year. We use them as speaking and pronunciation prompts, and for guessing, vocab and spelling games too. We don’t actually learn 25 fruits at this stage, but I use a range that includes some that children may not know yet, such as starfruit and redcurrants. That’s ideal for discussing healthy eating, and for generally developing children’s vocabulary in their own language too. The posters work really well as flashcards too, and they’re great for introducing and practicing language with a ‘low-tech’ method, giving us all a break from the whiteboard, which children definitely enjoy! Primary French FSL French Immersion These French Numbers 0-20 Halloween games cards are great for practising numbers in French with a focus on addition and subtraction - they also offer a really useful opportunity for multi-skill and cross-curricular learning. Children can develop their skills in word recognition and recall, pronunciation, speaking, listening and reading in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. My younger learners really love to work with the cards, and we play as often as we can in the run-up to Halloween. There are lots of games they like to play, and I’ve described several of them in the resource file. I always do a quick warm-up and recap of numbers before we play any number games, and the simple forwards and backwards counting presentation is ideal for this. There are 72 calculations in total - 36 addition and 36 subtraction. The answer cards are marked with a plus or minus sign. This means that there are 144 cards in total - it’s quite a bit of prep, but do laminate them if you can, as they are far more user-friendly, and also last for many Halloweens! I use this set to gradually introduce and work on the concept of gender, and to provide speaking and pronunciation prompts, from the straightforward Was ist das? to Ja/nein or Richtig/falsch questions, which allow us to move to from one-word responses to more complex language, such as plurals or particularly negative sentences, which can be quite tricky in German, and often requires a lot of practice Nein, das ist kein Apfel, das ist eine Banane and so on. This kind of vocabulary is really useful for an implicit approach to introducing and practising the accusative of articles too, for example Ich habe einen Apfel, ich habe den Apfel. The key focus on on the definite article, both masculine and feminine, singular and plural, though I do use the set to start to compare these with the indefinite article, which I’ve found to be a really successful way of helping students embed grammatical concepts such as gender, implicitly, without the need for repeated explicit instruction. It’s good to move away from predominantly teacher-led activities, and after the initial introduction phase, I have students take turns manipulating the cards and asking the questions. Again, this is a really popular activity, and a very easy way of enabling students to practise asking questions, instead of always responding to them. These display posters / flashcards create an instant introduction to 20 breakfast items in French, also giving the learning environment a fabulous French look and feel, promoting French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of your learners. They introduce students to breakfast items in French from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarise themselves with both the ‘look’ of French words, and how sounds are represented in the written form. There are 20 breakfast items within a sentence, Je prends… Je mange…, Je bois…, using either indefinite or partitive article, singular or plural - I use these as question prompts to get learners talking. It’s a great opportunity to begin to compare French to other languages that students speak. PRIMARY SPANISH KS3 VEGETABLES FLASHCARDS POSTERS My younger students love to see Spanish displays in the classroom, and they also work really well for older beginner Spanish learners too. There are 25 vegetables, definite article, feminine and masculine, singular and plural - that’s so useful as a way into the concept of gender. I tend to vary my displays quite regularly, and have different posters up at various times of the school year. We use them asspeaking and pronunciation prompts, and for guessing games too. We don’t actually learn 25 vegetables at this stage, but I use a range that includes some that children may not know yet, such as asparagus and artichoke. That’s ideal for discussing healthy eating, and for generally developing children’s vocabulary in their own language too. The posters work really well as flashcards too, and they’re great for introducing and practising language with a ‘low-tech’ method, giving us all a break from the whiteboard, which children definitely enjoy! There are 25 high-frequency regular and irregular -ERE verbs in the present tense. I encourage students to look for patterns across all the verbs, such as the formal Lei form being identical to the conjugation of singular pronouns. The workbook focuses on the mechanics of conjugation, rather than usage, but I find it useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb conjugation. For example, students whose first language is English do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in both languages, and I frequently see attempts such as io sto lavorare for I am working or similarly io faccio lavorare for I do work. I refer frequently the difference in usage, and this is important particularly when explaining when and in which contexts to use the simple present and the continuous / progressive present tense. The Challenge One Answer Key has both simple present and continuous present tense to help embed this notion a little more. The structure of the resource is as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: Italian-English and English-Italian Three differentiated conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1 each verb conjugated across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation.
